KIOST senior researchers Wonjun Shim and Sanghee Hong selected as ‘World’s Most Influential Researchers of the Year’

Among 141 people in the ‘Environment and Ecology’ field… Only two researchers from Korea’s KIOST were selected.

At the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, senior researchers Wonjun Shim and Sanghee Hong of the South Sea Research Institute were named to the list of ‘2024 World’s Most Influential Researchers (HCR, Highly Cited Researchers)’ announced by Clarivate Analytics, the U.S. organization that hosts SCIE. It was reported that it was uploaded.

SCIE (Science Citation Index Expanded) refers to a database of research papers and academic research.

Clarivate Analytics in the U.S. annually selects researchers who have published the most highly cited papers (top 1% of highly cited papers) over the past 10 years in each research field, including environment, ecology, chemistry, engineering, microbiology, and social science. This is equivalent to 0.1% of the total number of researchers worldwide.

Senior researchers Wonjun Shim and Sanghee Hong were selected in the ‘Environment and Ecology’ research field. Senior researcher Wonjun Sim received the honor of being selected for two consecutive years, and Senior Researcher Sanghee Hong was selected for the first time this year. In particular, in the ‘Environment and Ecology’ field, only two scientists from Korea were selected from KIOST, showing that KIOST’s research capabilities in the marine environment field are at the world’s highest level.

Senior researcher Wonjun Shim is a world-renowned authority in the field of marine pollution. He graduated from the Department of Oceanography at Seoul National University in 1990 and earned a doctorate from the same university in 2000. He has been conducting research in various fields of marine pollution since joining KIOST in 2003. . To date, over 200 papers related to marine pollution, including microplastic pollution, have been published in international academic journals and have been cited more than 14,000 times in total.

Senior researcher Hong Sang-hee is a world authority in the field of marine microplastic pollution. He graduated from the Department of Biological Sciences at Ewha Womans University in 1994 and earned a doctorate from the same university in 2002. Since joining KIOST in 2008, he has been studying the effects of persistent pollutants and marine plastics on the ocean. Research is being conducted to determine the impact on the ecosystem. He has published more than 130 papers in international academic journals and is the research director for the national research and development project (2015-present) related to marine microplastics.

They have been working together for a long time in the Ecological Risk Research Department within KIOST and have greatly contributed to the evaluation of pollution and the investigation of the environmental fate of microplastics in the marine environment, and the related research results have played an important role in domestic and international policy decisions and in promoting public awareness.

Dr. Won-jun Shim and Dr. Sang-hee Hong said, “As the 5th intergovernmental negotiating committee, which prepares a draft international agreement to end plastic waste pollution on Earth, including the oceans, is scheduled to be held in Busan starting next week, the draft international agreement based on scientific facts “I hope that this well-constructed and meaningful agreement will come into effect in the future so that we can preserve the marine environment as well as the marine ecosystem without burdening future generations,” he said.

KIOST Director Hee-seung Lee said, “I am very proud that two KIOST researchers were selected as the World’s Most Influential Researchers (HCR) this year.” He added, “In the future, KIOST researchers will continue to be world-class in various fields, including research on marine microplastics.” “We will do our best to provide support so that research results can be achieved.”
