Knife attack in Saint Petersburg

An individual armed with a knife injured four people on Friday in a supermarket in Saint Petersburg, in northwestern Russia, before being arrested by the police, the regional Investigative Committee announced, reports AFP.

The attacker “attacked the customers and stabbed them with a knife” in a supermarket of the Russian O’Key group, the Investigative Committee stated in a statement.

The reason for this attack is not yet known.

“Four victims with injuries of varying degrees of severity were hospitalized and received medical care”, while the suspect “was arrested at the scene”, according to the Committee.

An investigation has been opened for “attempted murder of two or more people”, according to the authorities.

The commission of inquiry released images of the supermarket after the attack, one showing a large bloodstain on the floor of one of the districts.

Photos, published by Russian media outlet Fontanka, show a man wearing a black jacket and pinned to the ground by police, as well as a blood-stained knife.

CCTV footage shows a man running through the supermarket, attacking a person with a knife before throwing a bottle at her.

A woman who witnessed the incident told Fontanka that she saw a man throwing “champagne bottles” and taking a knife.

The customers “ran away”, but he “caught up with a woman in the middle of the store and stabbed her in the chest”, she added
