Kohlrabi is increasingly present on our tables. Not only as a stew, but also as a tasty raw addition to winter salads, rich in vitamins and minerals. It is a vegetable with a short growing season and good resistance to low temperatures, so it can be grown as a late autumn variety without the risk of frost. The length of its growing season varies from 40 to 100 days, and for this reason, varieties with extremely short growing seasons should be chosen for this sowing period.
It is grown for thick tree which weighs from 70 to 250 grams. Also, varieties resistant to head cracking, reticulation, slower flower stem formation, diseases and pests are selected.
For the winter harvest, these vegetables are sown around September and harvests in December. Production can be transferred to greenhouses, or it can be kept in the field and, when frost or snow threatens, the plants are covered agrotextiles. In addition to protecting plants from low temperatures, it shortens the vegetation period by more than ten days.
Cabbage is usually grown after varieties fertilized with manure
For autumn production, the assembly should be eight to twelve plants per square meter. It is distributed on 40 x 30 centimeters or 30 x 20-30 centimeters. The plants are transplanted to a depth slightly greater than that at which they grew as seedlings. Since the rains are still weak and rare in this period, it would be good to prepare the soil before planting water well.
Cabbage is usually grown after the species fertilized with manure. It should not be produced on the same surface at least three years. It is best to choose plots with light soils for these vegetables, and if there are none, medium-heavy soils with a pH value of 6-7,5. They are still warm and easily absorb every ray of the autumn sun. Acid soils should be avoided due to the possible occurrence of diseases.
The optimum temperature for plant growth is 14-20 Celsius degrees during the day and 8-20 at night, while the soil temperature must not fall below eight degrees. At daily temperatures above 20 degrees, the leaves elongate faster than the tree thickens, which is not desirable.
And a little more water is a lot
This vegetable likes water but does not tolerate it overwetting. If there is too much of it, the thickened tree cracks. But, when it’s warm and the plants are lacking in water, the funeral courts are wooded and more kohlrabi not for use. There should be optimal soil moisture 70 percent Polish water capacity. The first time, kohlrabi is watered abundantly when planting (30 millimeters) and then every time five to seven days until the beginning of the formation of a thickened tree.

Kohlrabi is harvested by hand
Due to the short growing season, this vegetable should be provided with enough easily accessible nutrients. In order for fertilization to have a full effect, it should be coordinated with the chemical analysis of the soil. On average, 145-225 kilograms of nitrogen, 70-80 phosphorus and 180 kilograms of potassium are applied per hectare. If feeding is necessary, due to the short growing season, a smaller amount of nitrogen fertilizer is added before cultivation. Protection is the same as in cabbage with the fact that preparations are selected during the entire production short grace period.
Bere see by hand. At the same time as cutting off the thickened tree, older and damaged leaves are also removed. From this period of production, kohlrabi without leaves can be stored in cellars several months.
