Moscow – Russia will soon appoint a new ambassador to Washington. He will be Alexander Darchiev, the current head of the North American Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry. He stated that’s what the Russian newspaper Kommersant said today, citing three unnamed sources.
If confirmed, Darchiev will take office at a time when, according to Russian and American diplomats, relations between the two countries are at their worst since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis over the war in Ukraine. In addition, relations further soured this month after Ukraine used US and British missiles to strike Russian territory and Russia unveiled a new nuclear deterrence doctrine expanding the range of options Moscow can use nuclear weapons.
Between 2014 and 2021, Darchiev served as the Russian ambassador to Canada. He studied history at Moscow State University and is fluent in English and French. He has focused his entire career on the United States and North America.
His appointment has not yet been officially confirmed. From 2017 until last month, Anatoly Antonov served as the Russian ambassador in Washington.
