On the 27th, the ‘Kimchi Sharing Festival of Love’ event of the Korea Racing Authority (Chairman Jeong Ki-hwan) was held at Baro Market in Let’s Run Park Seoul, where heavy snow fell early.
This year, in a situation where household burden is increasing due to the rise in kimchi material costs, the Korea Racing Authority organized the ‘Kimchi Sharing Festival of Love’ event to distribute kimchi to needy neighbors in the community. About 100 volunteers from the Gwacheon Police Station, Gwacheon City Women’s Volunteer Fire Department, and the Gwacheon District Council of the Korean Red Cross Service Association, including the Korea Racing Authority’s employee volunteer group, participated in the event. Despite the cold weather, volunteers carefully mixed and packaged pickled cabbage for neighbors in need.
At the event, a total of 1,000 heads of cabbage and kimchi ingredients were used to make approximately 2,400 kg of kimchi. The Korea Racing Authority, which hosted the event, purchased and provided all materials from ‘Gwacheon Baro Market’, a direct transaction market, to promote coexistence between urban and rural areas and revitalize the local economy. About 460 boxes of kimchi made by volunteers were distributed to community members in the Gwacheon area, including senior citizens living alone, terminally ill cancer patients, North Korean defectors, and group homes, as well as young caregivers and families in crisis who needed a helping hand.
At the event venue, the three managers of the Korean Racing Association’s men’s and women’s table tennis and judo teams (Hyun Jeong-hwa, Choi Young-il, and Kim Jae-beom) made a surprise participation and attracted the attention of volunteers. The coaches, who wore aprons instead of uniforms and grabbed cabbages instead of rackets, tasted the kimchi they made themselves with the volunteer members after the event and saved the warm memories of sharing as commemorative photos.
