(Daejeon = Newsis) Reporter Kim Yang-su = While the artificial intelligence robot market is rapidly developing due to the convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) technology and robot technology, Korean companies appear to be leading the development of technology in this field.
According to patent application data related to robots applying artificial intelligence technology filed in the world’s major patent offices (IP5: Korea, the United States, China, the European Union, and Japan) announced by the Korean Intellectual Property Office on the 5th, the number of AI robots over the past 10 years (2012 to 2121) Patent applications are growing at an average annual rate of 58.5%, reaching 1,260 in 2021 from only 20 in 2012.
During this period, by nationality of applicants, China ranked the most with 60% (3,313 cases), followed by Korea in second place with 24.7% (1,367 cases), and the United States in third place with 8.1% (446 cases).
Looking at the average annual growth rate over the past 10 years, China is leading the patent applications in the artificial intelligence robot field with 59.7%, and Korea is closely following China with 53.4%.
In the analysis of applied artificial intelligence technology, application control technology that applies robots to various fields such as education, entertainment, and medicine was the highest at 53.6% (2,962 cases), followed by interaction technology with the external environment where robots recognize and manipulate objects. This was followed by 33.8% (1869 cases), followed by drive control technology that controls robot movements through learning at 12.6% (694 cases).
In the analysis by major applicants, LG Electronics was found to be the largest applicant with 18.8% (1,038 cases). Japan’s FANUC (1.8%, 97 cases) ranked second, China’s South China Normal University (1.5%, 83 cases) ranked third, and America’s Google (1.3%, 71 cases) ranked fourth.
In particular, LG Electronics appears to be actively securing rights at home and abroad by applying artificial intelligence technology for object recognition and voice recognition to cleaning robots, service robots, and logistics robots. In addition, Samsung Electronics also ranked 8th (0.7%, 41 cases), confirming that our company has great growth potential in the artificial intelligence robot field.
It is known that LG Electronics began research and development (R&D) in earnest in 2017 for new businesses in the robot and AI fields and is making continuous efforts to secure patents and portfolio.
Lee Seon-woo, head of the Intelligent Robot Examination Department at the Korean Intellectual Property Office, said, “It has been analyzed that patent applications for artificial intelligence robots are rapidly increasing in the field of application control technology.” He added, “Most of the applications in China are limited to their own country, and there are few patent applications from major global companies, so the development of drive control technology is difficult.” “If we work hard and actively pursue patent rights, it will be a good opportunity for our country to dominate patent rights related to artificial intelligence robots,” he advised.
