Koss Porta Pro headphones are a classic among classics. Six years ago, when testing the previous wireless model of these headphones, I called them DeLorean, thanks to their unchanged classic form, straight from the 1980s. Nothing has changed in this respect. However, the design of the wireless model has changed slightly, so Koss Porta Pro Wireless 2.0, at least in relation to the one I then had the opportunity to test and describe.
The new model – 2.0 – of the Koss Porta Pro Wireless headphones retains its classic appearance from the 1980s. It still attracts attention with its light design and form straight from the 1980s, specifically from 1984, when the first model of these headphones appeared. Next, the design of these headphones consists of small ear cups with uncut sponges, placed on light plastic fasteners, and the whole thing is connected by a headband made of extendable metal straps (two on each side).
The headphones are light, you can easily wear them all day long, even though their ear cups covered with sponges lie directly on the earlobes. Additionally, the headphones rest on the temples using special sponges and allow you to adjust the pressure using small mechanical Comfort Zone sliders.
When not in use, you can put them in the case included in the set. The plastic handles break towards the center of the headband, and the headphones folded in this way can be additionally secured with a special hook and stored in the case included in the set.
In all these respects, the form and design of the headphones remain unchanged. What has changed, however, is that now the batteries and the control panel are located in the headphones themselves. So there is no cable connecting both headphones with the batteries placed on it. Everything now fits into the ear cup mounts.
There are no additional cables, and the control panel – composed of three buttons – is located on the edge of the right earcup mounting. One of them is used to turn on the headphones and activate pairing mode, the other two are used to adjust the volume and skip between songs or pause and resume playback. The buttons also allow you to answer, reject and end a phone call.
Koss Porta Pro Wireless 2.0 also significantly extends the operating time on a single battery charge. Now they can play for up to 20 hours, and that’s actually what I was able to achieve during my testing. Charging is done using a USB-C cable connected to the socket located in the right earcup mount. Importantly, the set also includes a cable with a mini jack plug (3.5 mm), so the headphones can also be used wired, e.g. when the battery runs out.
Koss Porta Pro Wireless 2.0 are primarily wireless headphones, so it is worth mentioning that they use Bluetooth 5.2 to connect to the sound source.
When it comes to sound, it’s still a classic known from Koss headphones. The sound is natural across the entire bandwidth. Drums and bass guitars, as well as lower frequencies in general, sound great, the mids are fleshy and dynamic and the highs are subtle. The headphones create a relatively wide and transparent sound stage and are perfect for any music genre, especially those that I like (rock and progressive metal, broadly understood metal, classical and film music, and smooth jazz).
