Koss Porta Pro Wireless 2.0 / Legend without wires

You would probably be hard pressed to find headphones on the market that have been on sale for more than 30 years in an essentially unchanged form. It’s hard to say whether it was the Koss Porta Pro model that so brilliantly hit the fans’ taste with its design, sound quality or price, but it is true that they have been with us for 34 years. However, in order not to be boring, the American manufacturer decided to slightly innovate and adapt the headphones to the modern era by adding a bluetooth connection and removing the cable.

The fact that, except for the absence of a cable, these are still the same classic Porta Pro headphones, you can tell at first sight. The good old folding method of “breaking” the headphones into a small ring is what you associate with this model. The design has remained unchanged over the years. A typical double metal strip forming the head bridge, plastic sliders to fix the position and size of the bridge, a folding mechanism with hook and eye and soft foam cushions for support on the sides of the head. The comfort zone system, which allows small riders to choose the pressure of the headphones, was also not forgotten. The shells with the classic silver frame and screw also remained the same. The bluetooth module with control buttons and a blue LED managed to be integrated into the structure in such a way that you have no chance to notice it at first glance. Given that the trio of buttons are black on a black background, I looked for them for a while, helped by the belief that they must be there. The power/pairing button has a subtle blue symbol on it, which makes it at least a little visible. Of course, the inconspicuous buttons are certainly intended not to detract from the perfect historic shape of the headphones. The electronics are integrated in the ring around the earcups, the headphones work as TWS, on the right side there is an integrated microphone and buttons around the perimeter. In the open shells, as in the classic model, there are built-in transducers with a diameter of 4.4 cm and an impedance of 60 Ω, operating in the range of 15 Hz to 25 kHz.

Bluetooth is in version 5.2, the module supports the 4.1 standard and the aptX codec, which is more than enough for normal use. The built-in battery lasts about 20 hours of operation. If that wasn’t enough, with the included USB-C – 3.5 mm jack cable, the headphones can also be used in passive mode. In addition to the mentioned cable, the package also includes a USB-A – USB-C power supply and a practical semi-hard case for safe carrying of the headphones.

And how do the headphones play? If you’ve ever heard the classic Koss Porta Pro being played, the same. The headphones have excellent sound with deep bass and crystal clear highs. The sound is balanced and the performance more than sufficient. When talking on the phone, the sound is clear, without distortion and perfectly intelligible. The headphones are very comfortable to wear and thanks to the adjustable pressure, they really suit everyone. As befits a true legend, the headphones retain their authenticity, traditional quality and legendary durability and boldly step into the next thirty years of their existence.
