KPN solves problems with TV+ App, but complaints about Chromecast remain

KPN is rolling out an update to its TV+ App for Android TV to users with televisions from Philips and TCL. This solves the major problems on TVs from these two brands. But there are still many complaints about KPN’s TV app among Chromecast users.

With the KPN TV+ App you can watch channels and streaming services on smart TVs from well-known manufacturers without a decoder. This is, for example, very useful in rooms with a television but no decoder. You then simply watch TV channels via WiFi or Ethernet. However, users of Philips TVs have recently often seen a black screen when using the app. KPN is now solving that problem a special hotfix update for the TV+ App. According to the provider, ‘the green blocky image’ has now been resolved on TCL TVs.

If you have a Philips or TCL television, the update will automatically be available via the Google Play Store on your device. You can check which version of the KPN TV+ App you have by clicking on your profile in the top left corner, after which you will see the version number at the bottom left. The latest version of the app is 08.61.00.

Slow zapping on the Chromecast

Last week, KPN launched the updated version of the TV+ App for Android TV, which works, among other things, on the Chromecast with Google TV. Some users then complained on the provider’s forum that the app stuttered, worked slowly or even crashed. Users also complained about slow zapping between TV channels.

“The app is simply very unfriendly for the viewer with a Chromecast or other system without numerical remote control. Changing channels takes ten seconds,” responds a disappointed user. “We have the app running on our Chromecasts in the bedrooms, but since the update it has really become a drama app,” says another. “The app is very slow and sometimes does not start at all. The image then remains black. It also happens very often that when I start a channel, the picture is very poor.”

There are also complaints about the ‘cumbersome’ electronic program guide and the lack of settings for the subtitles. “The subtitles are terribly small,” said one viewer. KPN therefore still has many things to improve in the next updates of the app.

Problem with decoder

Earlier this month, many complaints were also received about the KPN TV+ decoder, which started up very slowly or froze. This should now have been resolved with an update.
