Soldiers of the Ukrainian 95th Air Assault Brigade showed off the self-propelled howitzer they use 2S19M2 Revenge-Swhich they named “Odin”. The weapon was captured by them from the Russians after intense fighting, and is now used to fire on the positions of its creators and former owners.
The conquered Msta-SM2 is one of 15 this type of howitzer guns captured by the Ukrainians, who are known to take advantage of such opportunities and incorporating captured equipment into one’s own army. So it’s likely that the Russians are currently facing at least a few examples of this particular artillery variant shelling their positions.
In addition to artillery, Ukrainians also use a huge number of captured Russian tanks and other armored vehicles. According to estimates from the end of last year, the Armed Forces Ukrainy they had at that time over 800 pieces of captured Russian equipmentit included, among others, a number of tanks for about 10 battalions, artillery, armoured personnel carriers, and even a mobile sauna.
2S19 Msta-Sis a Soviet self-propelled 152 mm howitzer, which has been produced since 1989it was developed as a successor 2S5 Hyacinth from the middle lat 70., which had an open compartment for the crew. The turret armed with a 152 mm 2A64 gun is placed on T-80 tank chassis, the car’s engine comes from a tank T-72. In comparison with the Hyacinth howitzer, Msta-S offers good level of crew protection thanks to the armored, fully enclosed turret.
The 2S19 gun is shorter than in most of the similar artillery of NATO countries, therefore, range of fire using standard bullets is less than 25 kilometers compared to about 32 kilometers with standard bullets in Polish Crab.
Msta-S can shoot at 29 kilometersif I apply ammunition with a so-called gas generatorwhich, thanks to the release of gas from the bottom of the shell, reduces the negative pressure behind the bullet, thus reducing air resistance. The bullets with additional rocket propulsionwhich however they are not very accurate. With this type of ammunition, Msta-S can hit targets at a distance up to 36 kilometers.
Conquered by Ukrainians 2S19M2 however, it is a modernized version of this vehicle, also called 2S33 Revenge-SM2. This is the latest variant of this Russian self-propelled artillery produced since 2013 year.
The modernization differs from the original mainly in its application modern automatic fire control systemwhich increased the vehicle’s rate of fire to 10 shots per minute from the original 6-8. In addition, it was also installed longer gunwhich, despite being much longer than the NATO standard, still has a shorter range. The 2S19M2 can shoot at 30 kilometers with standard bullets and 40 kilometers with rocket-propelled ammunition.
