Kris Kristofferson, the influential American singer, actor and songwriter with a string of hits including Me and Bobby McGee and Help Me Make It Through the Night, died on Saturday at the age of 88.

A family spokesman said Sunday that Kristofferson died surrounded by family at his home in Maui, Hawaii, but the cause of death has not yet been released to the public.

In 2016, he was diagnosed with Lyme disease after years of doctors claiming that the cause of his problems was either Alzheimer’s disease or dementia. It seemed likely, since that same year he also told Rolling Stone that he was suffering from debilitating memory loss. After three weeks of proper Lyme treatment, his wife reported that he suddenly felt better, although the bad days were still there.

“I feel lucky that life lasts this long, because I’ve done so many things that could have ended it a long time ago. It’s been good so far, and it will probably continue to be that way.” the legendary actor and singer announced at the time with optimism and his characteristic joy for life.

He wanted Cohen’s text on his tombstone

Kris always said he knew what he wanted written on his tombstone. He wanted the first three lines of Bird on a Wire, famous Leonarda Cohena.

“Like a bird on a string, like a drunk in a midnight choir, I tried to be free in my own way,” the mentioned three verses read.

Let’s remember that Kristofferson broke into the music world as a songwriter in the capital of country music, Nashville. He wrote hits such as the Grammy-winning Help Me Make It Through the Night, For the Good Times and Me and Booby McGee, one of his ex-girlfriend’s biggest hits, Janis Joplin.

In the early seventies, when he had already established himself as a singer, he also started an acting career. One of his most famous roles is in the movie Zvezda je rojena, in addition Barber Streisandwhich is considered one of the most popular films of 1976.
