According to the Minister for the Care of the Village Milan Krkobabić, the Ministry has made significant progress in the revitalization of villages throughout Serbia during 2024. The key goal of these programs is to encourage young families to move to rural areas, thereby contributing to the preservation and development of rural communities. As Krkobabic pointed out, this is not a temporary campaign but a strategic commitment of the Republic of Serbia, of essential importance for the preservation of national interests.
One of the most successful programs is the settlement of abandoned rural houses. This year, 870 houses were renovated, and since the beginning of the project, more than 3,500 families have found their homes in the villages. Krkobabic emphasized that this project contributes to the independence of young people and the development of local communities. The example of Mina Vujanović’s family, which moved from Belgrade to Brajković near Kosjerić, shows how state support enables young people to realize their dreams and start economic activities in a new environment.
Krkobabic: “The village is progressing… and check, I already said that”
The Ministry also continued the program of free transportation for the rural population, increasing the total number of minibuses to 78, including four municipalities in Kosovo and Metohija. After the successful implementation of the “500 cooperatives in 500 villages” program, a new Economic Activities Support Program was launched, which provides young people not only with homes, but also with the opportunity to develop their businesses. So far, financial support has been granted in 14 municipalities, and the first 50 entrepreneurs are expected to start working at the beginning of next year.
In addition, the Ministry launched an initiative to restore 19 rural homes. This creates spaces for cultural and sports activities, as well as social gatherings. These facilities will become community centers where young and old meet, contributing to the quality of life in the countryside. In addition, the “Miholjski susreti sela” manifestation, whose creator is Krkobabić, achieved new successes this year. In total, it gathered 250,000 participants from 1,500 villages in 113 municipalities across Serbia, promoting cultural values and traditions.
At the ceremony in the Palace of Serbia, the results of the program and plans for the future were presented. The presence of high-ranking dignitaries, SANU members and representatives of local governments, as well as exhibitions and cultural performances, marked this event. Krkobabic emphasized again that the revitalization of the village depends on the youth and their return. In this way, he says, the long-term survival of rural areas of Serbia is ensured.
