Lack of staff makes it easy for hackers

According to a study by Trend Micro, comprehensive, end-to-end cybersecurity is often not implemented due to a lack of staff, but also due to weak leadership.

Fewer and fewer companies are able to identify and minimize their digital attack surface due to resource constraints. Only 33 percent of the companies surveyed by IT security specialist Trend Micro (36 percent worldwide) have sufficient staff to ensure 24/7/365 cybersecurity.

Attack surface management

According to the study, only 36 percent (35 percent worldwide) use so-called attack surface management to assess their cyber risk. And only 28 percent (34 percent worldwide) rely on proven regulations or frameworks such as the “NIST Cybersecurity Framework,” the study authors emphasize.

In addition to the lack of resources, the lack of a sense of responsibility at the top of companies is also an explanation: Half of the German respondents (48 percent worldwide) say that their management does not consider cybersecurity to be their responsibility. Only eleven percent completely disagree with this statement (17 percent worldwide).

Inconsistent settings

According to the study authors, unclear guidelines for cyber security strategies could also be the reason why more than half (52 percent) of respondents in Germany (and 54 percent of respondents worldwide) complained about their company’s inconsistent attitude towards cyber risks. Appropriate prevention therefore falls by the wayside.

Many companies also lack the necessary leadership to address these problems. 95 percent of respondents in Germany and 96 percent of respondents worldwide are concerned about their company’s attack surface. 38 percent in Germany (36 percent worldwide) doubt their ability to detect, assess and mitigate cyber risks.
