The Lada Niva turns 48 years old and celebrates it with a new Sport version, as its name reveals. The engine is a 16-valve four-cylinder 1.7lt. output of 124 hp and 151 Nm of torque, compared to 83 hp and 129 Nm of torque of the basic version.

Power is sent to all 4 wheels via an upgraded 5-speed manual transmission, while Lada has added “sport suspension and brake settings”, which are supposed to give the Niva Sport an edge in driving dynamics over its humbler siblings. Of course, calling a Niva “sporty” is a bit of a stretch, but these settings might at least make it less of a struggle to struggle on anything that isn’t a straight line or dirt track.

The exterior features a red Sport badge on the plastic grille, a new set of 16-inch alloy wheels, wide fender flares, LED add-ons at the front and a new bonnet.

Inside, the Niva Sport features red accents on the seats that contrast with the black upholstery. This theme extends to the red stitching on the steering wheel, dashboard, glove box, gear levers and seats. From the available photo of the cabin, it appears that the Niva Sport is equipped with air conditioning, electric mirrors and electric windows, but no audio system, although this could be added later.

Although the launch of the Niva Sport has been delayed several times over the past few years, the company has now officially confirmed the start of production.

Lada has yet to reveal details about the Niva Sport’s market launch or pricing, as details will follow later. However, local media speculate that the new version will make it the most expensive model in the range.
