Lando Norris Takes to the Track in a LEGO McLaren P1

The LEGO Group and McLaren Automotive have taken on the challenge LEGO Technic more difficult than ever, recreating a McLaren P1 one of a kind and fully drivable, made with LEGO Technic elements. And if that wasn’t enough, the McLaren F1 driver, Lando Norriswas drafted in for the ultimate challenge: completing a lap of the iconic British circuit of Silverstone with the 1:1 scale LEGO Technic McLaren P1.

Fully functional

This full-size replica of the McLaren P1 is crafted from 342,817 LEGO Technic elementsweighing in at around 1220kg, and features some truly impressive engineering features. The car features fully functioning steering, making it the first major LEGO build that can steer and negotiate the challenging corners of a racetrack. The build features a electric motor made up of LEGO Technic Function batteries and an electric car battery, allowing it to travel further than any other LEGO model before it.

The great construction process saw the participation of 23 design specialistsengineering and construction of the LEGO Group and McLaren Automotive, with 8,344 hours of development and construction and requiring 393 different types of LEGO Technic elements.

Lando Norris laps Silverstone with LEGO McLaren

Once the car was assembled, all that was left to do was launch into the final challenge and, since it was a replica of a supercar from Woking, who better than Lando Norris could get behind the wheel. The British driver proved more than up to the task, tackling the bends of the 5.891 km track and completing the lap of the Silverstone circuit. With the enormity of this challenge, Silverstone was the perfect setting, given McLaren’s rich history with the British racing house.

Having worked on the original P1 programme for McLaren, it is incredible to see so many elements of the original McLaren P1 brought to life so realistically by the LEGO Technic team for the full-scale model. The car was an icon of its time. I hope that through this collaboration with the LEGO Group, we can inspire the next generation of designers and engineers to push the boundaries of automotive innovation.“, he said Ben Gulliver, Director of Test and Development, McLaren Automotive.
