In Nova Gorica, this weekend will again be marked by a new evacuation due to the removal of a bomb from the Second World War.

This weekend, more precisely on Sunday between 8 a.m. and expectedly 11 a.m., they will remove the 104-kilogram English aerial bomb from the Second World War, which was found three weeks ago in the area of the tracks of the Novi Gori railway station, i.e. in the same area as the previous aerial bomb bombs that have required evacuation over the past few years. The people of Novogorod are now used to the procedure.

As Primorske novice reports, the date of the evacuation and deactivation of the bomb is today at a meeting at the prefecture in Gorica under the leadership of the mayor of Novi Gorica Turela herself and the prefect of Gorizia Raffaela Ricciardija finally confirmed by the authorities on both sides of the border. Representatives of the competent Slovenian services presented a detailed evacuation process. Thus, from 8 a.m., entry will be prohibited in the evacuation area, which includes a 400-meter strip. The evacuation will be carried out by 9:00 a.m., and between 9 and 10:00 a.m. the authorities will check whether there are any other people left in the evacuation area. The sound siren, which will warn of the danger, is planned for 10 o’clock. At that time, the deactivation of aerial bombs will be able to begin, which will be carried out by members of the State Unit for the Protection against Unexploded Ordnance.

Two safety zones

As for the Slovenian side, two security zones will be established. In the red area, where 961 people live and which extends up to 400 meters away from the place where the bombs were found, a complete evacuation will apply. In the yellow zone, where 2,064 people live, a cover-up measure will apply, which means that these people will have to stay indoors after the siren is triggered. This area extends on the Slovenian side of the border between 400 meters and 600 meters from the place where the bombs were found. On the Italian side of the border, only an evacuation zone will be established, namely in a zone 600 meters away from the place where the bombs were found, explained the Municipality of Novi Gorizia. The entire area of evacuation and sheltering will otherwise be monitored by the competent services with drones, both on the Slovenian and Italian sides.

The municipality of Nova Gorica also warns that the former small border crossings on Erjavčeva Street and Solkan will be closed between 7 a.m. and expectedly 11 a.m. They also draw special attention to the bicycle path along the border, which will also be closed during this time. During the evacuation, the Panovec tunnel will also be closed due to the resurfacing of the road (except in case of bad weather).
