Latvia has allocated another 1.4 million euros to strengthen border security with Belarus

On October 8, the government approved the allocation of an additional 1.43 million euros to cover costs associated with enhanced surveillance on the Latvian-Belarusian border. These funds are used to pay wages, travel allowances, food, fuel and other expenses of employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Since December 2021, there has been an increase in migration pressure at the Latvian border, which forces the state to allocate significant amounts from the budget to strengthen security.

This year, 4,614 migrants were prevented from illegally crossing the border, while 18 people were allowed into Latvia for humanitarian reasons. It was recently decided to extend the enhanced security regime on the border with Belarus until December 31, although previously this regime was supposed to be in effect until September 12.
