Latvia intends to build Rail Baltica bypassing Riga

The Latvian government on Tuesday, November 26, after many hours of discussion about the Rail Baltica project, decided to reduce the costs of the project as much as possible, and also to prioritize the construction of the route from the border with Lithuania to the border with Estonia, bypassing Riga and the completion of international stations, writes Rus.ERR with a link to lsm.lv.

The Ministry of Transport of Latvia has prepared an information report “On the scenario for the implementation of the Rail Baltica project in Latvia.” It proposes, as a priority in the first phase, the construction of a single-track route from the Lithuanian border to the Estonian border, as well as its connection with a European standard gauge track to one of two international stations in Riga (Central Station or Riga Airport). Before the completion of the first phase, it is proposed to connect both mentioned stations within the existing railway infrastructure.

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina emphasized that it is necessary to “cut down all unnecessary things and come to the most functional line possible.” The Latvian government was only able to reach a preliminary decision on the priorities of the project, in order to then move towards a functional railway line, taking into account available funding.

The Latvian government has previously approved the intention to build the main Rail Baltica route of European standard, that is, 1435 mm wide along the following route: Latvian-Lithuanian border – Misa – Upeslejas – Vangaži – Latvian-Estonian border. Construction should start from the section from the Lithuanian border to Misa and continue sequentially in accordance with available funding.
