Consumer. As of this weekend, USB-C is officially the common charging standard within the EU, according to an announcement from the European Commission on X.

“This means better charging technology, reduced e-waste and less hassle to find the chargers you need,” writes the commission.

The new requirements cover a range of electronic devices, including mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, portable speakers, handheld video game consoles, e-readers, earphones, keyboards, mice and portable navigation systems.

As of December 28, 2024, all such devices sold in the EU must be equipped with a USB-C charging port and comply with USB Power Delivery (PD).

For notebook computers, the corresponding requirements will be introduced somewhat later, starting on April 28, 2026.

The initiative aims to simplify things for consumers and reduce the amount of electronic waste that arises from redundant chargers.
