A leading member of the armed Palestinian movement Hamas has lost his life in Israeli custody in the occupied West Bank.
This was announced by the Palestinian Authority on Friday evening, according to the Reuters news agency.
According to the self-government’s Commission for the Affairs of Detainees, it is 63-year-old Mustafa Muhammad Abu Ara. He has lost his life after a significant decline in health, says the commission.
It is not immediately clear what his health problems consisted of.
It is also not immediately clear why Mustafa Muhammad Abu Ara was detained by Israel, or whether he was convicted of anything.
In Israel, the police are allowed to detain people under the rule of ‘administrative detention’.
This means that you do not have the right to be told what you are suspected of and that you do not have the right to a trial.
There is no fixed limit to how long the police may detain a person.
