League 2 competitive season structure – 2024/2025
By the decision of the Executive Committee of the FRF of July 13, 2023, the competitive format of the second echelon was validated, which will start on August 3.
The League 2 competition will be played in two phases as follows:
The first phase of the competition will consist of a regular season, in which all 22 teams will participate and in which they will play each other only once, with a total of 21 stages.
The second phase of the competition will consist of a play-off and a play-out, in which the teams will be distributed based on the final ranking of the regular season and in which they will enter with all the points accumulated until then.
The top six teams will participate in the play-off, and the games will be played back-to-back, thus resulting in 10 more matches for each team. At the end of the play-off, the first two places will advance directly to League 1, while the 3rd and 4th place holders will play a play-off match with the 8th and 7th places from the SuperLiga play-out, according to the following scheme:
3rd place in League 2 against 8th place in the SuperLiga play-out
4th place in League 2 against 7th place in the SuperLiga play-out
The remaining 16 teams will participate in the play-out, divided into two groups, A and B, with eight teams each. The teams ranked at the end of the regular season in the 7th, 10th, 11th, 14th, 15th, 18th, 19th and 22nd places will play in group A, and the teams in the 8th, 9th, 12th, 13th, 16th, 17th places will play in group B. 20 and 21.
The participants in each group will play each other only once, resulting in a schedule of seven stages and seven matches for each team.
The teams ranked 7th and 8th from each group of the play-out will be directly relegated, while the 6th place holders from each group will play a play-off match in a double leg to stay in League 2. The host team in the round leg a the team from group A will be in the bracket.
If teams withdraw during the regular season, the number of relegations will decrease accordingly, but the division into the two groups will be done in the same way, considering the places of the withdrawn teams as the last.
