The US basketball team has clearly won its third preliminary round game at the Olympic Games. The NBA stars including LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry won clearly against Puerto Rico in Lille with 104:83 (64:45) and thus finished the group phase undefeated and as the best team.
In front of around 27,000 spectators in the sold-out Stade Pierre-Mauroy, Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves was the top scorer for the favorites for gold with 26 points. In total, six players in coach Steve Kerr’s team scored double figures.
The USA only had a few minor teething problems in the first quarter and were behind 25:29 after ten minutes. But by halftime, the winner of the last four gold medals had turned the game around and was leading 64:45.
In the quarterfinals, the USA will face Brazil in Paris on Tuesday. Since the US boys and the German team finished the preliminary round as the best teams, they can only meet in a possible final.
Germany will face either Greece, Serbia or South Sudan in the quarter-finals. The decision will be made in the last preliminary round match between Serbia and South Sudan at 9 p.m.
