(Celebrity Health) Comedian Lee Hyun-joo reveals the story of her tongue being cut off
Comedian Lee Hyun-joo (58) revealed the story of how she was diagnosed with a disability after having her tongue cut off.
Lee Hyun-joo recently appeared on MBN’s entertainment show ‘Dongchimi’ and talked about the tongue-cutting accident she experienced at the age of 28.
At the time, Lee Hyun-joo explained that she bit her tongue while eating a snack while the anesthesia had not worn off yet after dental treatment. She said, “Because I had no feeling, I chewed the snack along with the part of the body where the anesthesia had not worn off yet.” She continued, “It felt chewy and blood flowed from my mouth, soaking the script.”
Afterwards, Lee Hyun-joo received five stitches in the emergency room on her tongue, but was rated as a level 5 disabled person. He said, “After my tongue was cut off, I had trouble speaking,” and “Comedians make a living by talking, so I was mentally devastated and became depressed because of the shock.”
The tongue that tastes, mixes food, and even makes sounds… You should take your severed tongue and go to the hospital quickly.
The tongue is a muscular organ that moves freely to mix food evenly and move it to the throat, and helps us to taste. If the tongue is torn or cut, it will not only be difficult to swallow food, but as Lee Hyun-joo said, pronunciation may become slurred. The tongue also plays a role in making sounds by passing air through it. The tongue and lips move organically to complete specific pronunciations, and if part of the tongue is cut off, this function will inevitably decline.
If the tongue is injured, it directly affects daily life, so prompt treatment is necessary. If the tongue is cut off like Lee Hyun-joo, you should take the cut tongue and go to the hospital quickly. If the cut is left unattended, the tongue muscles may rot, which may interfere with the surgery. Wrap the cut tongue in gauze, seal it in a plastic bag, and place it in ice water. Washing the tongue with tap water or disinfectant can damage the tissue, so it is better to move it in a clean plastic bag as it is cut.
If your tongue is simply torn, stop the bleeding with ice or gauze… If you have difficulty speaking after treatment, you may need rehabilitation exercises.
If the tongue is simply torn, check for bleeding. If there is light bleeding, use ice to stop the bleeding. If there is a lot of bleeding, lower your head, spit out the blood in your mouth, rinse your mouth with clean water, and then stop the bleeding. Be careful not to tilt your head back, as this can cause blood to flow into the airway and cause breathing difficulties. After that, wrap the tongue with gauze or a towel and press it with your hand. If it is difficult to press it with your hand, place several layers of gauze on the torn area, close your mouth, and stop the bleeding.
If pronunciation is still difficult after tongue treatment and wounds have healed, tongue rehabilitation exercises may be necessary. Since tongue movement is uncomfortable and pronunciation is not complete, strengthening the tongue muscles is helpful. The tongue, which is a muscle mass, can be strengthened with simple stretching. Open your mouth wide, stick your tongue out, and move it up and down. Repeat the movement of pressing the tip of your lips and the left and right with your tongue 5 times. Rub the outer surface of your gums with your tongue and make one circle. Do this 5 to 10 times clockwise and counterclockwise. It is also good to place your tongue between the roof of your mouth and your front teeth and press hard for 10 seconds.
