Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party of Korea’s representative candidate, said on the 18th, “I will become ‘Muksanijam’ (Muksanist Lee Jae-myung) who will create a Republic of Korea that runs again.” In his declaration of candidacy for party representative, the candidate had previously presented ‘Muksanism’, the issue of the people’s livelihood, as the essence of politics.
In his opening remarks at the Democratic Party of Korea leadership debate held on CBS that day, the candidate said, “What is the original role of politics? In the end, politics is about solving the problems that the people face in terms of their livelihood.”
He said, “I think South Korea should once again become a hopeful country that improves the lives of its citizens,” and “A country that was respected in economy, diplomacy, and culture has become a country that is criticized by the entire world. We need to go back to that era and create a world where the citizens have hope and want to have and raise many children.”
The candidate said about running for re-election, “Considering personal and political interests, there is no practical benefit to continuing as party leader,” and “(In the general election) we achieved an overwhelming majority as the opposition party, and now is the best time, so wouldn’t it be better to quietly prepare for the next one? If I calculate it myself, that would be better.”
However, he emphasized, “The Yoon Seok-yeol administration is engaging in politics that borders on corruption, with no interest in state affairs or the people’s livelihood,” and “Are we going to ignore this, stand by, and leave it as is? I thought I had to play a role in this regard.”
