The Leeum Museum of Art’s three-month project ‘Aerocene Seoul’ was officially opened to the public on the 2nd. This project, which has attracted the attention of domestic and international audiences, is part of Leeum’s public program ‘Idea Museum’ sponsored by the Chanel Culture Fund.
Aerocene is an interdisciplinary community of artists, activists, geographers, philosophers, and thinkers from around the world who come together to perform collaboratively. A successful first step in Seoul is <무세오 에어로솔라>, <에어로센 백팩 워크샵>and a forum to raise awareness about climate change and sustainability.
The highlight of the Aerocen Seoul Project <무세오 에어로솔라>is a floating museum in which the global community participated in the production. For this activity, Chanel Korea employees and Yongsan-gu residents of Seoul participated in the project by collecting about 5,000 plastic bags. In a series of workshops held at various regional art galleries in Korea hosted by Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, volunteers connected the collected plastic bags to create a canvas for environmental protection. The work created in this way is installed in M2 of Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art and can be experienced until September 29.
‘Aerocene Seoul’ is a floating ecological justice movement that shares the vision and message of Aerocene communities around the world developing community-based programs for ecological social justice and moving towards ethical reunion with the Earth.
‘Aerocene Seoul’ opened the forum with a welcoming speech by Kim Sung-won, Deputy Director of Leeum Museum of Art. Then, Maximiliano Raina and Tomás Saraceno’s ‘Flying with Pacha to the Aerocene’ (2017-2023) was screened. The film contains the story of the ongoing collaboration with the communities of Salinas Grandes and Laguna de Guayatayoc in Jujuy, Argentina.
On the same day, Chanel held an opening reception to celebrate the opening of the project. At the event, Director of Education and Research at the Leeum Museum of Art, Koo Jeong-yeon, who planned the Idea Museum, and Tomas Saraceno gave welcoming speeches. In addition, Chanel House Ambassador G-Dragon, Ha Jung-woo, Jung Ryeo-won, and other key figures from the domestic and international art world attended and graced the event.
The Idea Museum, which began in December of last year, is a mid- to long-term project in which domestic and international artists, philosophers, and scientists participate, capturing the changing points of sociocultural paradigms such as the climate crisis, (im)sustainability, ecology, women, education, and care under the broad theme of ‘ecological transition.’
