Lenovo launches ThinkShield Firmware Assurance for advanced protection in front and behind the operating system

Lenovo introduces ThinkShield Firmware Assurance as part of its portfolio of enterprise-grade cybersecurity solutions.

ThinkShield Firmware Assurance is one of the few OEM computer solutions that enables deep insight and protection behind the operating system (OS).

This is achieved through Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA), which ensures component-level insight and delivers more accurate and actionable risk management data.

ZTA acts as a security paradigm that explicitly identifies users and devices to provide appropriate levels of access. This allows businesses to operate with reduced risk and minimal disruption. The framework is essential to mitigating risk as organizations work toward full Zero-Trust implementation.

Visibility and protection

Gartner predicts that only 10% of large enterprises will have a mature and measurable Zero-Trust program in place by 2026, up from less than 1% in 2023. Lack of insight into device components can create greater challenges in hybrid work environments where organizations often have difficulty assessing hardware and firmware risks. With ThinkShield Firmware Assurance, enterprise PCs and the networks they are part of become more secure, helping to meet ZTA goals.

The solution offers management of critical components through detailed attestation measurements, which can be analyzed and risk assessed. This assigns each unit a specific trust level. Unlike third-party software-based security methods, ThinkShield Firmware Assurance uses a dedicated embedded controller (EC) that validates critical components and configurations during boot, ensuring a platform root of trust.

ThinkShield Firmware Assurance can be quickly implemented so that IT teams get a better overview of PC fleets and networks faster and more efficiently. It also prevents the installation of software and firmware components unless they are signed with approved certificates. In addition, unauthorized changes to BIOS policies are prevented, while automatic recovery ensures their original state.

“Lenovo’s continued innovation in computing underscores our commitment to enabling smarter AI for everyone. Cybersecurity is a determining factor in how and where AI is adopted. This is a key driver of why we focused on the supply chain, for and behind OS security,” says Nima Baiati, Executive Director & GM of Commercial Cybersecurity Solutions at Lenovo. “ThinkShield Firmware Assurance is a unique solution that gives customers better insight and increased confidence in risk management.”
