Lenovo should market a laptop PC with a rollable screen

In tech, we like to imagine the devices of tomorrow and brand concepts that allow us to imagine what the future will look like. The problem is that products at the concept stage are sometimes the delight of trade shows, but they never really reach our hands. Lenovo is not part of this category and the company intends to launch the first portable PC with a rollable screen. Leaker Evan Blass recently published images of a rather unique laptop of its kind: the sixth generation Lenovo ThinBook Plus.

The great particularity of this machine concerns its screen which unfolds in height. A mechanism allows it to be extended vertically, allowing the user to easily increase the display area of the laptop. No more need to use an external monitor and carry around an additional device, whether for work or play. The images show different usage scenarios, like the ability to watch YouTube videos on the top and work on the bottom area. This “dual screen” also allows the possibility of displaying a document on one side and a PowerPoint presentation on the other. The advantages offered by a large display area are multiple and we understand why Lenovo has been working on this project for a long time.

Lenovo has been refining its expandable screen laptop for years

In 2022, the brand had already shown its progress in flexible screens. In addition to a rollable smartphone which will give birth to the “Rizr” during Mobile World Congress 2023, Lenovo showed a laptop with an extendable screen. We were able to approach this laptop PC of the future, as we can see in this video:

The prototype had a rollable OLED screen that could go from 12.7 inches in 4:3 aspect ratio (2024 x 1604 pixels) to 15.3 inches in 8:9 aspect ratio (2024 x 2368 pixels).

A switch was placed on the right of the chassis to activate the different motors. The prototype needed around ten seconds to fully unfold its screen. Once folded, the screen slides under the keyboard and Lenovo had mentioned a lifespan of only 20,000 to 30,000 rolls. Two years later, Lenovo seems to have improved its project and would be ready to market this funny laptop. According to Evan Blass, it will be the first in its category to arrive on the market after a presentation at CES 2025.

Note that the event promises to be important for Lenovo which should also present its new portable PC console in Las Vegas. The Legion Go S could even usher in a new era by embedding the SteamOS operating system. The start of next year looks very promising for Lenovo, without forgetting Motorola which intends to take a new step.
