The Min Countryman has changed a lot compared to the previous generation, even offering an electric version. But is it better?
The iconic SUV from the British manufacturer, the Mini Countryman, is reinventing itself and changing completely. New platform, new style, new engine… But is the new generation an improvement over the old one?
Mini Countryman: from mini to maxi volume!
Completely transformed, the Mini Countryman changes category. And for good reason: it is 15 cm longer than the previous one! Its 4.45 m allow it to integrate the highly sought-after compact SUV segment. If it has grown in length, it is because this new generation is based on the BMW X1 platform. The front end gives the vehicle more presence, and the stylistic elements have gained volume. This is especially the case for the grille, much larger than on the previous generation and now octagonal. The glossy black roof bars are now standard regardless of the trim level, and the wheelbase has gained 2 cm, thanks to the new dimensions of the Mini Countryman.
Inside, this growth spurt mainly benefits the rear passengers, who have plenty of legroom. The trunk also appears a little more spacious, but the fairly high threshold can hinder loading heavy objects. We also find the very clever sliding bench seat, which allows the trunk volume to be increased from 460 to 565 dm3 if necessary. The originality of the dashboard also characterizes this new opus. All the functions are now grouped on an atypical disc-shaped touch screen, which can be personalized. However, we sometimes get lost in the many submenus.
Equivalent performance, but much less power-hungry!
In the petrol version, the Mini Countryman starts at the entry level with a three-cylinder turbo coupled with a 48 V micro-hybridisation. In total, the model develops a power of 170 hp. Just like the platform, the mechanics are shared with the BMW X1. A power roughly equivalent to that of the previous Countryman Cooper S which developed 178 hp. Admittedly, the 1,615 kg extra weight of the new Countryman C does not allow it to be as efficient. But its 170 hp is more than enough for everyday use, and gives you enough punch when accelerating and relaunching to overtake for example.
With an average consumption measured at 6.9 l/100 km, compared to 8.1 l/100 km for the previous one, its 1.5 turbo is much more frugal. Thanks to light hybridization. And how smooth! Its platform gives it great agility, but comfort is a little firm, despite a ground clearance of more than 20 cm.
Overall, the model progresses in almost all areas. Even if some may regret the less “mini” aspect, due to the enlargement of the model. In terms of driving pleasure and performance, if the Mini Countryman is not regressingit does not progress at all. The sore point is the price. The new model is almost €4,000 more expensive than the old one.
