If your Instagram video posts are not popular and sought after by users, they will be of reduced quality. The head of Instagram confirmed that the service will leave only attractive videos with higher quality.
The controversial decision of the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, to change the quality of videos on the social network according to their popularity has outraged many users. Less watched videos are now automatically displayed in lower quality, while popular ones do not lose quality. On the contrary. In a discussion with users on the Threads platform, A. Mosseri explained that the new rules are meant to help optimize server demands and reduce data consumption, especially for older or less watched videos. “Most videos are watched by users shortly after they are published. That’s why we decided to reduce the quality, especially for older videos, the content of which is no longer so attractive,” said the head of Instagram. But he added in one breath that if the server records a higher number of views even for older videos, it will automatically offer them in higher quality.
However, content creators consider video quality to be one of the essential elements for attracting an audience. Some of them object that Instagram “punishes” smaller creators with this policy and deprives them of the opportunity to assert themselves. But A. Mosseri claims that the social network dynamically adjusts the quality of videos according to the current viewership at a given time. He emphasized that the priority of the platform is to show users the best possible content available to them at that moment. He also thinks that the quality of the videos is more important to the creators themselves than to the viewers, who are willing to watch even lower quality videos if they are interested in the content.
With its approach, Instagram copies similar strategies of other platforms, which also changed the quality of streamed content in the interest of more efficient use of resources. For example, during the pandemic, platforms like YouTube lowered their default playback quality settings to avoid server overload and keep services running smoothly for all users. However, the news raises questions about how the new rules may affect the competitiveness of smaller creators and change access to quality content on social media.
