LG Chem is developing functional cosmetics made from eco-friendly raw materials.

On the 17th, LG Chem announced that it would produce products using 100% bio-based ‘3-hydroxypropionic acid (hereinafter referred to as 3HP)’ derived from vegetable oil as a functional cosmetics raw material. If development is successful and commercialized, it will be the first case in the world. 3HP is an eco-friendly bio raw material produced through a microbial fermentation process of vegetable raw materials.

LG Chem holds patents for 3HP strain, fermentation, and purification technology, and continues to apply for patents for various cosmetic compositions using 3HP as a raw material based on non-clinical test results. Recently, a business agreement (MOU) was signed with Daebong LS, a company specializing in cosmetic materials and raw medical products. The two companies decided to verify the efficacy of 3HP, select a functional cosmetics product line suitable for use as a raw material, develop the formulation and secure stability, and complete efficacy verification through clinical evaluation by next year. Through this cooperation, LG Chem plans to expand its new business area to the field of functional cosmetics raw materials and accelerate its entry into the market.

LG Chem Vice Chairman Shin Hak-cheol said, “This cooperation is meaningful as the first step in developing sustainable beauty raw materials,” and added, “We look forward to expanding the field of application to various functional cosmetic raw materials.”
