(Seoul = Newsis) Reporter Lee Da-som = LG Energy Solutions announced on the 8th that its Arizona subsidiary and American electric vehicle company Rivian signed a contract to supply cylindrical batteries.
The supplied product is the ‘4695 (diameter 46 mm, height 95 mm) battery’ among the cylindrical 46 series batteries, which are called next-generation batteries. The total volume is 67GWh (gigawatt hour) and is scheduled to be supplied for 5 years. It is planned to be installed first in Rivian’s newly released electric SUV R2.
The 46 series products are called ‘game changers’ that will change the landscape of the electric vehicle market in the future. Compared to the existing cylindrical battery (2170), the energy capacity has improved by more than 6 times. From the manufacturer’s perspective, reducing the number of processes per energy improves productivity in terms of cost and time, which also increases price competitiveness.
LG Energy Solutions said, “The 46 series cylindrical batteries are leading the way in portfolio diversification by successively winning large-scale supply contracts,” adding, “In particular, the 46 series batteries supplied this time are characterized by the application of high nickel, which maximizes energy density and ensures safety. “He said.
The quantity will be produced at LG Energy Solutions’ Arizona plant, which is its second exclusive production plant in the United States and its first cylindrical-only plant. Construction is progressing smoothly after commencing in earnest this year. Currently, the foundation work has been completed and the steel structure work is being completed.
LG Energy Solutions is focusing on product and customer diversification by announcing a series of large-scale orders in the second half of this year. Following ▲Renault ▲Benz ▲Ford, and ▲4695 battery with Rivian, the company strengthened its portfolio with various products such as the 46 series, focusing on pouch batteries.
Kim Dong-myeong, CEO of LG Energy Solutions, said, “This supply contract is the result of recognition of our overwhelming technological superiority in the next-generation cylindrical field.” He added, “We will accelerate our market dominance by further differentiating customer value based on stable supply capabilities that are one step ahead.” revealed.
