LG’s new computer monitor has very thin bezels, a high 6K resolution and a design that seems to come straight from Apple’s design table.
LG has had some of the best screens for years with its line of UltraFine monitors. In terms of design, those monitors always lagged behind competitors, especially Apple. While Apple fits its screens tightly into the aluminum all around, LG’s design was mainly functional. For example, the UltraFine 5K had a black plastic housing with fairly thick edges. The UltraFine 6K shown at CES goes completely in the opposite direction.
The 32-inch 6K monitor has stunningly thin bezels. It is not clear how thin exactly, but it must be a few millimeters: practically borderless. A beautiful aluminum base emerges from underneath that almost borderless screen. If you look from the side, the Apple inspiration is immediately clear. The screen also looks quite thin, sleek in the aluminum. The base in particular is reminiscent of the stand that Apple has for its Studio Display and Pro Display XDR. The screen also hangs from the upright base with a double hinge.
Possibly 120Hz, good for pros
In addition to the resolution of 6016 x 3384 pixels, it is also clear that the UltraFine 6K is the first 6K screen to support the new Thunderbolt 5. The latest version of the high-speed port was recently unveiled by Apple and is included in the new M4 Pro Mac mini and M4 Pro MacBook Pro.
Thunderbolt 5 offers more bandwidth, enough to transport 6K images at a higher frame rate than Thunderbolt 4. It is not yet clear whether the UltraFine 6K will indeed support a higher speed of 120Hz, or will be stuck at 60Hz like Apple’s monitors: LG hasn’t said anything about that yet.
LG does state that the screen supports a wide color palette thanks to its Nano IPS Black panel: 99.5 percent of Adobe RGB and 98 percent of DCI-P3. According to LG, this can be easily calibrated for professional use, although there are much more expensive and even more accurate options for real image professionals.
This makes the UltraFine 6K more likely to become a competitor for the Apple Studio Display of 1,779 euros than for the Pro Display XDR of 4,999 euros. It is not yet clear when LG wants to sell the UltraFine 6K.
