LG’s car assistant will order coffee if the driver is tired

LG Electronics (LG) presented the newest member of the Mobility Labworks series featuring advanced automotive technology concepts, the Digital Cockpit gamma solution intended for self-driving cars of the future. Following the debut of the alpha and beta models last year, this is the third in a series of innovative digital interfaces that offer an exciting glimpse into the future of mobility.

Although the Digital Cockpit gamma not even found in a car, the solution will summarize and embrace LG’s most sophisticated vehicle technologies. The futuristic concept is based on three pillars: the so-called Vision Display for display system, that is For intelligent digital interface is a Connectivity & Content to a solution called Car manufacturers will be able to flexibly apply these modules to the type and design of the given vehicle, as they offer many customizable functions. THE Digital Cockpit gamma thus essentially revolutionizing the entertainment, communication and driver support systems built into cars.

Vision Display: The future of car interiors

A Vision Display it offers many new possibilities in the cars of the future and is able to adapt to the dynamic traffic environment. The 12.3-inch transparent OLED screen in self-driving cars offers key data to inform and entertain passengers: it displays real-time navigation, current speed, and also shows user-friendly locations on the map. LG’s solution also includes a 14.2-inch plastic OLED (P-OLED) display embedded in the center console, which can be pushed back when not in use, keeping the cabin clean and minimalistic.

Intelligent digital interface: Intuitive, AI-driven user-vehicle interaction

The Intelligent digital interface leveraging artificial intelligence and responsive touchscreen technology, it provides simple, intuitive interaction between users and the vehicle. One of the most unique solutions is the adaptive controller: it is a touch-sensitive, curved OLED display integrated into the steering wheel, with which drivers can comfortably enter the settings of the navigation, multimedia and climate control system, and they also receive haptic feedback.

In self-driving mode, the adaptive controller makes driving more enjoyable by providing convenient access to entertainment apps and games. LG’s AI-based virtual assistant also provides additional support in various traffic situations. For example, if the assistant detects that the driver is tired, it can order coffee from a nearby place, which can be paid for immediately with the fingerprint scanner built into the screen. The Intelligent digital interface it also supports the ATSC 3.0 standard, so system updates and real-time emergency alerts work even without a network connection.

Connectivity & Content: entertainment and mobility seamlessly

A Connectivity & Content solution called transforms the rear row of seats into an interactive entertainment center through the 5G network connection and the webOS platform known from LG smart TVs. Passengers can stream high-definition content, watch live broadcasts, interact with locations marked as useful, share the content of their screen with the in-car display mirroring function, navigate between content with hand gestures, and control the volume.

“The Digital Cockpit range demonstrates LG’s leading role in the creation of high-end vehicle onboard solutions and working concepts of innovative technologies”

said Eun Seok-hyun, president of LG’s automotive solutions business.

“We will continue to develop customizable solutions that improve the driving experience and provide a smarter, safer road environment.”
