He killed first his mother-in-law and then his wife with a mix of drugs: with this accusation the Court of Assizes sentenced the former doctor of the Virtus Bologna basketball team to life imprisonment in the first instance, Giampaolo Amatowith daytime isolation of a year and a half. The sentence on the two murders arrived after six hours of deliberation in the court of the Emilian capital, at the end of a circumstantial trial in which the ophthalmologist always declared himself innocent.
The story
According to what was decided by the Bolognese judges, Amato is responsible for the death of his mother-in-law Giulia Tateo87 years old, found lifeless on October 9, 2021, and subsequently his wife Isabella Linsalata62 year old gynecologist.
The two women were killed within 22 days of each other with a lethal mixture of Midazolam (benzodiazepine) and Sevoflurane (hospital anesthetic).

The life sentence
For the prosecution, Amato is the only possible person responsible for the deaths of the two women, because he knew how to handle these uncommon medicines and could easily remedy them, as well as having been at the site of the two murders in the hours in which they occurred.
Among the clues to support the Prosecutor’s thesis there would be the positivity to Midazolam from the analyzes of one bottle of wine which Isabella’s sister kept after finding the woman stunned, following dinner with her husband.
As reported by Republicthe ophthalmologist would have wanted to continue to use his wife’s properties, despite having left home following an extramarital affair: according to the prosecutors, the motive of the two murders it would have been the attempt to take possession of the properties.
The former Virtus doctor, however, was acquitted of the charge of embezzlement for having stolen the drugs used for the murders from the healthcare facilities where he worked, because the fact does not exist. The Local Health Authority of Bologna, which had taken part in this accusation as a civil party, was therefore denied the request for compensation.
Compensatedinstead, with Isabella’s sister, Anna Maria Lsala, and Giulia’s brother, Nicola Tateo, with 750 thousand and 230 thousand euros respectively. The reasons for the life sentence should be filed within 90 days.

Giampalo Amato had made spontaneous statements in the courtroom before the sentence: “I am an innocent person who turns to his judge. In my life I have never committed any crime, I have never done violence towards anyone. I respect the laws and as a doctor I follow the Hippocratic Oath. The story that concerns me is a tragedy, not a crime or a misdemeanor. There is no fault, no criminal, no guilty party. I am completely innocent and I trust that I will be restored to my life, my children, my loved ones and my work.”
“This accusation was handled in an uncritical and unidirectional manner – declared al Rest of the Pug the defense lawyer, Gianluigi Lebro – Amato is innocent and I am convinced of this, he is telling the truth. No one told us how he administered Midazolam to his wife and how his mother-in-law died. They don’t know how they died and are asking for life imprisonment. For those who clearly are two natural deaths“.
