The answer to this question is provided by a new study, which found that living near a body of water improves health and increases the feeling of happiness for older people. Those living up to 300 meters from the coast have a 13.2% lower risk of mental decline, loss of memory and reaction, the journal claims Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety in a published study.
The explanation is quite simple. Moist air around large bodies of water limits air pollution, which has been linked to worsening age-related diseases. The sight and sound of rippling water also helps. They reduce stress levels and improve mood.
