Lightyear wants to expand and raises 10 million euros

Dutch solar car company Lightyear has completed a successful investment round: it raised 10 million euros. The intention is to use this to expand.

Lightyear wants to build a stronger team of experts and technicians by hiring more of these people. It hopes to become a major supplier to the automotive industry. It is positive that many investors see opportunities in this sustainable invention: Lightyear has had a bumpy road.

Lightyear

Lightyear had the goal of releasing a solar car since its founding in 2016, but just after the first car finally rolled off the production line last year, the company had to file for bankruptcy. Then a restart followed in April 2023 and the company has taken a completely different approach. It no longer has the ambition to produce its own solar car, instead it wants to make solar technology and offer it to others in the automotive industry.

So it makes sense that investors see something in it: the company’s innovations are commendable. “After a challenging year, these investments will ensure continued production of highly efficient on-board solar systems for vehicles, such as solar panels on car roofs,” says Lightyear, who sees it as an opportunity to change the world of mobility after all by offering other automakers technology that allows cars to drive for months without having to plug in.

Solar roofs

Lightyear hopes that in a few years cars will be driving on the road with their solar roofs, because that is the technology that is currently at stake. From the factory in Venray it produces the roofs, which are called Lightyear Layer. In 2023 it stated that it is not inconceivable that it will eventually produce millions of roofs per year.
