Wilhelm Tell is known for shooting an apple off his own son’s head, but his exploits didn’t end there.
Nick Hamm’s new Wilhelm Tell film (William Tell), known for Godsend, Killing Bono and Gigi & Nate, paints such a functional picture of the classic leg bow hero that the film has already been compared on YouTube to Austria’s own Rambo.
The plot description tells the following about the film:
“In 1307, Austrian troops oppressed the Swiss people. Wilhelm Tell had vowed to end the use of violence after the Crusades, but nevertheless joins the resistance to stop the bloodshed.
The Austrian governor Gessler forces Tell to shoot an apple off his son Walter’s head, but as a skilled archer he manages to do this without harming the boy. Gessler takes Telli and the Habsburg princess Bertha prisoner, but the two soon manage to escape.
Both Tell’s attempt to assassinate Gessler and the princess’ pleas to the king to end the war fail.
Bertha stabs the king and his son just as Tell returns home to find his city looted and his beloved wife Suna dying.
Encouraged, Tell leads the resistance in Altdorff, where Walter is also among Gessler’s hostages. When news of the king’s death reaches the company, Gessler is abandoned and Tell shoots him dead.
Despite Austria’s defeat, their new queen Agnes vows revenge.”
In addition to Claes Bang (The Square, The Northman, The Outlaws) portraying Wilhelm Tell, Wilhelm Tell is starred by, among others, Connor Swindells, Ellie Bamber, Rafe Spall, Jonathan Pryce and Ben Kingsley.
Although there are no big stars in the film, and even Wilhelm Tell is quite marginal as a character in the 2020s, SF Studios has decided to give the film a chance and will release it in theaters in Finland on March 14.
