Like me: urban gardens against climate change

The company A1 Serbia continues the greening of urban areas throughout Serbia

Did you know that Belgrade got a sunny garden of diversity, Subotica a dry succulent garden, and Bečej an aromatic garden? In the past period, 10 cities across Serbia received various urban gardens within the project Nilo like me. As part of the first phase of this project last year, cities received their first rain gardens – urban green areas that contribute reducing the consequences of heavy rains, floods and landslides in urban areas. This year, with the aim of improving and expanding the areas formed, all gardens were supplemented with furniture and new types of plants, which were selected in accordance with the needs of the locations where the gardens are located. The goal of the Niklo as me project is to offer a direct response to the negative consequences of climate change, which the company A1 Serbia is implementing in cooperation with the Citizens’ Association Econaut and local governments.

The Belgrade garden, as one of the 10 urban gardens realized within the Niklo kao ja project, was transformed into a sunny garden of diversity. It is located in Gastrošor, the city’s hit location just one kilometer from Republic Square. “The urban form of the garden in Gastrošor responded to requirements such as a habitat for insects, birds and small animals, and was achieved in one concept. This kind of garden contains floral decorative plants, evergreens, perennials, aromatic shrubs, as well as conifers that contribute to biodiversity with their presence. The shape of the garden represents a circular entity, which has an aesthetic purpose, but also a major role in improving biodiversity,” said Vladimir Milutinović, landscape architect and associate of UG Ekonaut.

In 2023, 10 cities in Serbia got rain gardens: Belgrade, Novi Sad, Subotica, Novi Pazar, Smederevo, Kragujevac, Čačak, Niš, Bečej and Sombor, and the garden in Bečej was voted the most beautiful. This year, as part of the project, urban gardens are planned to be planted in 10 more cities in Serbia, spreading a positive impact on the environment and quality of life throughout the country.
