Like Wrapped: This is how YouTube copies Spotify

While Spotify Wrapped 2024 is a long time coming, YouTube surprises with a new annual review that is strongly reminiscent of the competition.

The year is coming to an end – and that means the Spotify Wrapped annual review is just around the corner. Many users of the streaming app are looking forward to reviewing their personal musical highlights of the year, but Wrapped has even more to offer. In all likelihood, Spotify will once again offer users an overview of the most popular songs, artists and podcasts worldwide and in Germany this year. You can read about who made it to the top last year in our article on Spotify Wrapped 2023.

Spotify’s annual review for this year has so far been a long time coming. In previous years, users often had access to their Wrapped lists at the end of November, but this year the musical annual review could not be published until December 4th, as Chip.de reports. With references to the Wrapped playlists for 2023 and 2022, Spotify is encouraging users to get in the mood for Wrapped 2024. The platform is also already teasing the annual review on Instagram.

Are you a “Hometown Hero” or a “Hopeless Romantic”?

Not only Spotify, but also YouTube for several years now offers users a musical review of the past year. As YouTube CEO Neal Mohan announced on Threads, in 2024 it will contain a number of new features in addition to an overview of the most frequently listened to songs and artists.

New this year are animated story cards that are easy to share, similar to Spotify. YouTube also provides a description of personal listening habits, for example “upbeat” or “relaxed”, as well as a timeline of your personal musical journey through 2024. YouTube also gives all users an individual “music film character” such as “Hometown Hero” or “Hopeless Romantic.” This feature is also reminiscent of Spotify – in 2023, the platform integrated the so-called listening personalities into the annual review for the first time.

For the first time, the YouTube Recap not only contains musical highlights of the year, but also an overview of the most frequently listened to podcasts. It remains to be seen whether YouTube will use the opportunity to integrate not only audio content but also video content into Wrapped in the coming years and thus differentiate itself more from Spotify.
