Lithuania purchased almost 5 million potassium iodide tablets worth 500,000 euros, Latvian media write about this with reference to the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Lithuania.
The drugs will be distributed among residents of 17 municipalities located within a radius of 100 kilometers from the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP). This measure was taken after assessing the risks associated with the operation of the nuclear power plant, located near the border with Lithuania and just 40 kilometers from Vilnius.
Minister of Health Maria JakubauskienÄ— stressed the importance of having iodine tablets for people living near the nuclear power plant. This allows you to protect the thyroid gland from exposure to radioactive iodine in the event of an accident, preventing cancer.
The tablets will be provided free of charge through municipalities or pharmacies designated by local authorities. A prescription is not required to obtain them, and along with the drug, residents will receive instructions for proper use. Lithuania implemented such an initiative for the first time in 2020.
