LO:S should step out of the sandbox

Domestic. S has joined in and voted yes to abolish the so-called surplus target and instead aim for the state’s finances to be plus or minus zero. But LO wants to go even further and demands state finances that go backwards – as in Greece – and now claims that S should step out of the sandbox.

According to Aftonbladet, LO is considering supporting a group of contenders at the Social Democrats’ party congress.

– I’m disappointed that all these big parties don’t step out of the sandbox and take out everything we can give. I have listened to economists from both the right and the left, and they all state that Sweden could have gone further than the balance target. These are small steps, but Sweden needs to take a giant step into the future, says chairman Johan Lindholm.

LO wants to spend borrowed money on, among other things, housing and welfare, which would require replacing the current surplus target with a waste target instead of the upcoming balance target.

The surplus target was originally 2 percent and was introduced after the 1990s crisis. But after the record increase in the amount of money during the corona crisis and the seemingly unlimited resource that the housing market has proven to be, many believe that the time when crises could occur in the Swedish economy is over. The surplus target has therefore been lowered regularly and will now be completely abolished, the parties in the Riksdag have decided.
