The starting day of the fifth stage of the Russian Figure Skating Grand Prix brought two sensations at once. The first one turned out to have a minus sign: Pyotr Gumennik failed to cope with one of the two quadruple jumps in the short program and took only seventh place, 16.78 points behind Vladislav Dikidzhi. In the dances, there was a sudden castling: Vasilisa Kaganovskaya and Maxim Nekrasov were ahead of former national champions Elizaveta Khudaiberdieva and Yegor Bazin. There were no surprises in the other two events: Sofya Akatieva took the lead among women, and in the pairs competition, Alexandra Boykova and Dmitry Kozlovsky were slightly ahead of Anastasia Mishina and Alexandra Gallyamov.
