Loudspeakers from Renkus-Heinz enhance the sound in the Letzigrund Stadium

Case Study

,

Originally built by members of FC Zurich Letzigrund Stadium has been a home of football and “Weltklasse Zürich” since 1925, one of the most renowned day events in athletics. When the stadium needed to be modernized in the late 1990s, it was closed and reopened in the summer of 2007 with an improved capacity. Since then, European championships, concerts by international artists and major Swiss Football League games have taken place there. In order to offer spectators optimal sound regardless of the event, Letzigrund has upgraded its sound system with Renkus-Heinz.

Sound upgrade for Swiss cult stadium

The integrators avidec AG and the audio consultancy promedias AG worked on the project. Since the event program in the stadium changes regularly, the system had to be weatherproof and flexible enough to transmit speech, music and announcements. What was important was an even and balanced sound pressure level as well as uniform sound. The C and T series loudspeakers from Renkus-Heinz in the weatherproof WR version offered exactly what Letzigrund was looking for.

“Renkus-Heinz has a large range of loudspeaker systems, so we were able to find the perfect solution for this project,” remembers Chris Steiger, board member and founder of promedias AG. “We originally installed 48 CX61s in 2022 as near-field speakers for the audience in the back rows. This year we expanded the system further and replaced the original speakers that were installed when the stadium reopened in 2007 with over 30 TX151s. This allows us to deliver a homogeneous sound at all events.”

avidec installed 31 TX151s on the roof of the stadium to provide the audience with powerful sound. There are two loudspeakers in each front field, with one loudspeaker aimed at the athletics track and the second aimed at the front row of spectators. In the back field, a TX151 loudspeaker provides sound for the rear rows of spectators, the back three rows of seats are provided with sound by the additional, smaller CX61.

T-Series and C-Series from Renkus-Heinz

“The T-series loudspeakers from Renkus-Heinz are versatile enclosures that can be integrated almost anywhere,” says Chris Steiger. “The models are ideal for sports facility projects and deliver excellent sound performance in every area of the Letzigrund.” The TX151 implement the unique developments from Renkus-Heinz with their complex conical horns. These horns provide consistent coverage and directivity without the problems of traditional rectangular horns.

The C series includes compact two-way speakers. Featuring the same complex conical horn technology as the T-Series, the CX61 models offer high volume in a small housing as well as low distortion and high frequency performance.

“avidec AG has been supporting the system since it was installed in 2007, i.e. for over 17 years,” says Steiger. “The experienced technicians at avidec AG chose the T and C series models from Renkus-Heinz because they have a very good beam angle, a high sound pressure level and a weatherproof housing. These models fit perfectly into the existing infrastructure. With this first conversion, we have now equipped 40% of the spectator stands with new sound. We plan to add more TX151s for the middle and rear rows of seats and the playing field next year.”
