Lower growth rate in apple production – EU and Serbia: a comparison

Apple production in most countries of the European Union recorded a decline in the past season, which affects the availability of the most sought-after varieties and leads to an increase in retail prices. According to data from the World Association of Apple and Pear Producers, the yield of the gala and golden delicious varieties fell by 10 and 11 percent compared to the previous year, while the red delicious yield increased by a fifth. The yields of the new varieties remained at the level of last year. The main cause of this decline is unfavorable weather conditions, especially the spring frosts that affected most of Europe.

Annual stocks of apples in many European countries also decreased, except in Italy, Spain and Switzerland, where they increased compared to the previous year. France records a three percent drop in production, while South Tyrol maintains a stable quality of plantings. Despite logistical challenges due to the geopolitical situation, European apple exports to South America are still present. However, the increase in retail prices does not ensure sufficient earnings for manufacturers to cover increased production costs.

Challenges in apple cultivation before 2025

Poland, as the largest producer of apples in the EU, faces similar challenges as other countries. Dominik Wozniak, a representative of Polish producers, points to a decrease in yields and suggests diversification and promotional campaigns to increase apple consumption. Professor Zoran Keserović from the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad notes that the yield of apples in Serbia has also decreased, with a drop of around 130,000 tons compared to the former average. Producers in Serbia are facing an increase in production costs, which have increased from 12-19 eurocents per kilogram to over 25 eurocents, while daily wages for pickers have increased significantly.

Keserović points out that Serbia should focus on varieties such as Golden Delicious, Greni Smith and Gale. In addition, he emphasizes that ajdared should keep its place. However, he believes that the production of red delicious should be stopped due to problems with freezing and dropping of fruits. At the international apple fair in Italy, these challenges were highlighted, with the conclusion that bad weather conditions are the main cause of problems in apple production. Manufacturers try to respond to cost growth and changes in the market by adjusting their assortment and production strategies.
