Actor Luis Varela, a perennial supporting actor in Spanish cinema, has passed away today at the age of 81. Throughout his long career, Varela worked with some of the most prestigious directors such as Luis García Berlanga, José Luis Garci and José Luis Sáenz de Heredia.
Born in 1943, Varela always knew he wanted to pursue an acting career. He made his debut at a very early age, at just six years old, with a theatre company. He found his place in the world on Spanish Television, which during the 60s and 70s broadcast the prestigious programme Estudio 1, which brought theatre to all Spanish homes.
He also participated in several Soap operas television, literary adaptations that were broadcast in chapters and were very successful at lunchtime and had its role in the children’s series, Today is also a holiday, which aired between 1972 and 1973. Varela combined his work in television with his beloved theatre and cinema.
He joined the choral cast of Luisito as the child Miracle Thursdays (Luis García Berlanga, 1957), one of the masterpieces of Spanish cinema in which the inhabitants of a town tried to attract attention by inventing a Marian apparition. The cast was headed by Pepe Isbert, José Luis López Vázquez and Mariano Ozores.
