As “block parties” were born more than 50 years ago on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, in New York, they were street parties organized by the African-American community, always with lots of music in the mix. Nowadays, street parties take place in streets closed to traffic and have spread to international territories.
On this side of the ocean, the street party organized by the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, in collaboration with music and video production company RedMojoto celebrate its 8th anniversary, has free entry from 12pm to 7pm. Emerson Ferreira, founder of RedMojo, sees this party as “an opportunity to celebrate the diversity and unity of our beloved city of Lisbon”.
During the three days of celebration, Praça do Carvão has art installations, performances, visits, workshops, gastronomy and conversationsas well as a market, organized by The Spot Market, filled with fashion, jewelry, decoration and craftswhich serves as a manifesto for fair trade and the creative economy. By choosing the agency Purple Mayo, the best and most trends Lisbon’s gastronomy will be present, bringing together the most varied culinary styles in one space. The director of MAAT, João Pinharanda, sees this weekend as an opportunity to “expand the universe of the museum’s audiences”.
For lovers of electronic music and houseon the 4th and 5th, starting at 8pm, there will be two parties with paid entry, curated by the event’s partner and producer of artists such as Madonna, Pitbull, Pusha T, Rich The Kid and Anitta, RedMojo. The first phase of ticket sales, already on sale, will have the price €25.
Friday, October 4th, Block Party joins the organization of Tribeca Film Festivalmarking its proximity, on a poster full of names from electronics. Groove Armada the party will start with house, trip hop, chillout e funk. DOT (Day Out of Time) brings with it the Brazilian atmosphere, with its song “Eu vou pra Bahia”. Finally, with disco, techno, afro e vocal househe arrives Shugi.
On the day that MAAT celebrates its 8th anniversary, Saturday, October 5th, nightlife music comes from all over Europe. From Spain it comes Pablo FierroSpanish DJ and producer, who organically combines Afro, Latin and electronic music. The Italian Raffa Guido will demonstrate its usual mix of soul, jazz e house. Finally, born in London, but currently divided between Lisbon and Dubai, Megatronic mixes electronic music with African rhythms and traditional Middle Eastern sounds and Latin influences, celebrating what it most defends: the celebration of female diversity in the Middle East and North Africa.
What began as a celebration of the museum’s anniversary ended as a cultural propagation event, with Lisbon as the setting and inspiration.
