Apple may have been a little late, but it’s finally released the next big update for the Mac: macOS Sequoia 15.1. This brings the first wave of new Apple Intelligence features to the Mac, as well as some non-AI upgrades.
New features available in macOS 15.1, including Apple Intelligence
A nice and important upgrade macOS 15.1 is getting is iPhone Mirroring, a feature first introduced in macOS Sequoia last month. Now you can drag and drop photos and files between your Mac and the mirrored iPhone. This is a convenient alternative to AirDrop for quickly moving files between devices.
Additionally, the battery menu in the Mac menu bar gets a new low-power mode toggle in the new update. This makes it easier than ever to turn battery saver on and off.
Here are the AI features available in this version:
- New Siri features : There’s a new look, typing functionality, Apple product insights, more robust request handling, and more. But the bigger upgrades will arrive in future updates.
- Notification summaries: Get more actionable and useful notifications thanks to AI summaries.
- Writing tools: Use system-wide tools to correct, rewrite, or reformat your text. Then, later this year, ChatGPT will turn into writing tools as well.
- Clearance in Photos: Remove unwanted objects from your photos with ease.
- Natural language search in Photos: Find exactly the right photos and videos with search that really works.
- Create a memory tape: Give custom AI instructions and it will create a special video for you.
- Priority messages in Mail: AI will put the most important email front and center.
- Smart reply to mail and messages: Use suggested answers that are better than ever.
- Summaries in correspondence and messages: Get thread summaries that are more informative than a simple snippet.
- Intelligent Breakthrough & Silence in Focus : Take advantage of the existing focus functions, but with AI that allows only important notifications.
Compatibility and requirements
macOS 15.1 is available for all Macs that could run macOS Sequoia. It is available in “System Settings” from the “Software Update” section.
Key features, including Apple Intelligence, are only available for Macs with an M1 or later chip (eg M2, M3, M4). Intel models will get a more fruitless update.
Apple Intelligence features are marked as beta by Apple, and gaining access to them requires joining a waiting list first.
