Swearing in of office in Venezuela
The whereabouts of Edmundo González, head of the opposition, who promised to return to the country, is unknown
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has been sworn in for a third six-year term, despite international condemnation of his recent re-election as illegitimate, while his administration has become increasingly brazen in its repression of opponents. While his supporters are expected to demonstrate, it is unclear whether opponents will take to the streets. It is also unknown how Edmundo González, opposition leader who at the time declared himself the winner of the elections, will assume the presidency, as promised.
