Magdeburg loses handball thriller against Kielce

In the new edition of the quarter-finals of the previous season, Kielce and the German champions SC Magdeburg fought an intense duel, but in the end the Poles triumphed this time.

The German handball champions SC Magdeburg suffered their second defeat in the Champions League. The Bundesliga team narrowly lost 26:27 (15:19) against the Polish champions Industria Kielce in the Getec Arena at home. The best Magdeburg thrower was Omar Ingi Magnusson with seven goals. For the SCM it was the fifth defeat in the thirteenth competitive game.

Kielce arrived with only ten field players, but took the lead after just under five minutes. Magdeburg had little access in defense, but still held on. But Kielce consistently punished several mistakes in attack and led with three goals (9:12/17th). “Our problem is clearly the defense. Please defend!” coach Bennet Wiegert demanded of his team. Magdeburg then had problems, especially offensively, and only managed an attack rate of 36 percent.

After the break, the SCM took advantage of some of the guests’ mistakes to reduce the score to two goals (19:21/39th), but continued to miss too many attacks – such as two seven-meter penalties and a fast counterattack. The game became more and more intense, the SCM stayed on through Philipp Weber, but was unable to reduce the deficit any further for a long time. After 50 minutes the deficit was only one goal for the first time, but despite a total of thirteen saves from goalkeeper Sergey Hernandez, the burden from the first half was too great.
