MagentaTV is growing slightly, but is benefiting to a limited extent from the end of the additional cost privilege

In the third quarter, MagentaTV gained a five-digit number of TV customers. So things went less well than during the European Championships.

The good news first: MagentaTV also gained new customers in the third quarter of 2024. As was announced on Thursday, the number of customers increased by 76,000 to 4.59 million. Growth has therefore also slowed: in the second quarter, in which the majority of the European Football Championship broadcast by MagentaTV took place, 114,000 additional subscribers were gained. The increase for the whole of 2024 is now 263,000. The growth in Q3 was therefore almost identical to that in Q1. However, the gains are higher than in Q3 2023.

The additional cost privilege is over – what has it achieved for Telekom so far?

But it is also clear that the end of the additional charge privilege has not exactly led to a real rush – there may be several reasons for this and one of them may be that Vodafone (which has lost many customers) does not immediately cut off the connection to everyone who cancels.

By the way, Telekom as a whole is very satisfied with the economic development. In a media release sent out on Thursday, there is talk of continued success. “The growth momentum is unbroken on both sides of the Atlantic,” said Christian Illek, Chief Financial Officer of Deutsche Telekom. “At the same time, we managed to reduce our debt to below our target.”

According to Telekom, fiber optic use in Germany is continuing to gain momentum. In the third quarter, a record number of 131,000 customers decided to use a Telekom fiber optic tariff. In the same period last year, the number of newly commissioned FTTH connections was 77,000. The number of broadband customers grew by 38,000 net. Among retail broadband customers, 49 percent now use a tariff of up to 100 Mbit/s or higher. With 327,000 new mobile contract customers under its own brands, Telekom recorded what it called a “strong quarter”. Mobile service revenue increased 2.1 percent between July and September compared to the same period last year. Sales in the Germany operating segment rose by 2.5 percent to 6.5 billion euros in the third quarter. Adjusted EBITDA AL increased by 3.5 percent to 2.7 billion euros.

Overall, Deutsche Telekom’s revenue in the third quarter (excluding the influence of changes in exchange rates and scope of consolidation) rose by 3.6 percent to 28.5 billion euros.
